District Teacher of the Year

Nikki Culbertson

Spartanburg District Four Teacher of the Year

2016 - 2017

Nikki Culbertson, 5th grade teacher at Woodruff Elementary School, has been selected as 2016-17 Spartanburg District Four Teacher of the Year. Nikki teaches English Language Arts, Social Studies, and Read 180 at Woodruff Elementary. She serves as grade level chairperson, representative on the school and district literacy teams, and member of the Social Studies/multicultural program committee. She is vice president of the Spartanburg Chapter of the SC International Reading Association and a member of the International Literacy Association.

Nikki graduated from Limestone College with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. She has a master’s degree from Walden University in Elementary Reading and Literacy and is National Board certified in Early and Middle Childhood Literacy. She has plans to pursue an Ed.S. in Literacy. This is her 10th year as a teacher and her 3rd year with Spartanburg District Four.

Nikki’s favorite subject to teach is reading. Her yearly goal is to make sure every student develops a love for reading. She is passionate about helping students develop the necessary tools they need to be lifelong lovers of books. Nikki states, “I love reading children and young adult books, so that I can share recommendations with my students. It is always fun to see their eyes light up when they find out they are reading a book I have read or a book that is on my “To Be Read” list. I want my students to leave my classroom at the end of 5th grade thinking of reading as something they “get to do” and not necessarily something they “have to do”. If my students reach that point, then I have accomplished my goal as a reading teacher.”

Nikki and husband Adam have 3 children: her step-daughter, Shelby, who is a senior this year, three year old, Elijah and two year old, Lillian. They are members of Selma Baptist Church. In her free time, she loves watching Clemson Tiger football and attending football games. She also loves to attend the Woodruff Wolverine football games. Her favorite thing to do as a family is to travel and camp. Her favorite past-time is reading. She is a member of a book club that meets once a month. She loves getting together with colleagues and friends to talk about reading. Some of her favorite authors are Colleen Hoover, Clare Mackintosh, and Nicholas Sparks.

When asked her thoughts on being named District Teacher of the Year, she stated, “I am amazed. The fact that I work with the best of the BEST makes it a total and complete honor to be recognized in this capacity. Although I didn’t grow up in Woodruff, it has quickly become my home, and I am blessed to be able to work for the best district in the state. I have the most wonderful team mates and colleagues and could not ask for better people to work alongside each and every day!”

We are grateful that Nikki is a member of the Spartanburg District Four family and are pleased to have her represent our outstanding faculty members as our 2016-17 District Four Teacher of the Year.
