Emily Montjoy

Spartanburg District Four Teacher of the Year

2017 - 2018

Emily Montjoy, 4th grade teacher at Woodruff Elementary School, has been selected as the 2017-2018 Spartanburg District Four Teacher of the Year.  Emily teaches English Language Arts, Social Studies, and previously taught Read 180.  This year, Emily will lead an after school book club, Reading Rockstars.  She serves on the School Improvement Council and co-chairs the reading and writing committee.  She is secretary of the Spartanburg Chapter of the SC International Reading Association and a member of the International Literacy Association.

Emily graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education.  She has a master’s degree from Converse College in Elementary Education.  This is her 12th year as a teacher and all twelve years have been at Woodruff Elementary School with Spartanburg District Four.  She dreams of one day driving a Bookmobile or writing her own New York Times Bestseller.

Emily’s favorite subject to teach is reading.  She strives every year to make sure each of her students develop a love of reading.  She is passionate about sharing books and connecting her students to their favorite authors.  Emily states, “The best feeling, as a reading teacher, is watching your students bury their noses in a book without being asked to read.  I read so many middle grade books for pleasure so that I am able to share new and exciting titles with my classes.  I hope my students would say my love of reading is evident and rubs off on them throughout the year.  I love when students start sharing book recommendations with their classmates and discussing books they’ve just finished with each other.  Developing a classroom community based around the shared love of reading is my number one priority.”
